Kolhapur is world famous for leather footwear called "Kolhapuri
Chappals". The city is also front runner iron casting and
foundry industry, the end products produced in the Shiroli
MIDC and Gokul Shirgaon MIDC are mainly supplied to vehicle
manufacturing units through out the country. In the absence of
local consuming market almost two third of the foundry
industry is depended on the vehicle industry of the country
and gets effected with the boost of vehicle market.
If we look at the last five years, a tremendous growth is
visible. During the last year 2006 -2007 the average monthly
foundry production has reached to high point of 40,000 tons
per month. If we compare with the year 2001 [12,000 tons per
month] a significant growth of over 300 % can be said amazing
for the city like Kolhapur. Though it is said that due to
increase in the rates of pig iron and less availability of
scrap is going to affect the production adversely but is you

City is coming up on the I T fronts also, presence of IT park
and other related family are favoring the rise of the city as
one of the biggest IT Center in the South Maharashtra after
the Pune. The growing demands for high definition house hold
appliances, vigorously speeding number of internet users and
higher willingness and attitude for the online commercial
presence can be taken as the early evidence of giant IT
structure that city is going to shape as in very near future.
